Hydrogen fuel: a powerful fuel for future

Hydrogen fuel can lead to a big change in how we get energy in the future. It’s cleaner and more eco-friendly for our planet, too. and that is why it is known as a powerful fuel for the future. Hydrogen is the most common thing in the universe. It is a natural gas and a clean alternative to methane. About 75% of the universe has hydrogen. it is the lightest element, with each atom containing one proton.  Earth has a vast source of hydrogen, as it can be found mostly everywhere, like in plants, animals, humans, and water. Because of this, it can change how we get energy, giving us a strong option instead of relying on things like oil and coal. It’s being explored for use in power plants to generate electricity, powering cars and factories. This means it has the potential to change many parts of our lives for the better.

What is hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a natural gas which is the lightest, colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. It is the most abundant element in the universe, at around 75%. The most important property of hydrogen is that it produces water when combined with oxygen. That’s why water is also known as H2O.

What is hydrogen fuel?

Hydrogen fuel is a clean fuel, and when it’s used, the only byproduct is water vapor. It does not emit harmful gases as the other fossil fuels and biofuels do, like carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Hydrogen fuel is the cleanest fuel for our planet.

How is it made?

Hydrogen fuel can be generated through various methods, but the most common methods used in the making of hydrogen include:

Steam Methane Reforming (SMR): In the steam methane reforming process, the first step is that methane (CH₄), the primary component of natural gas, is combined with steam (H₂O) to produce hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO).

Primary steam-methane reforming reaction:
CH4 + H2O (+ heat) → CO + 3H2

In the second step, carbon monoxide is reacted with steam to produce additional hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2).

Secondary Reaction:

CO+H2O→CO2+H2

SMR is a highly efficient process for large-scale production of hydrogen.

Electrolysis of water for hydrogen production:

Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This reaction takes place in a unit called an electrolyzer. below is a better explanation of how electrolysis of water is done for hydrogen production

gasification of coal: in which coal is heated in steam to produce syngas and hydrogen is obtained.

Photolysis: sunlight and semiconductors are used to split water to obtain hydrogen along with oxygen.

Advantages of Hydrogen fuel cell in India

India  is making significant headway in adopting this revolutionary technology. Hydrogen fuel has the potential to change our energy landscape as it has a vast use, from generating electricity to generating power for cars and industries. government is already in talks with international organizations and companies to exchange knowledge, research and expertise. as India is trying its best to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen fuel, as it is the cleanest fuel, will help achieve the goal. Apart from this, it will also create jobs and opportunities for people. In conclusion, hydrogen fuel in India can help in environmental stabilization, economic growth, and job opportunities.

 Countries using  hydrogen fuel

China is the largest consumer of hydrogen and also the largest producer of the same. China’s usage of hydrogen amounted to some 24 million metric tons. other countries are : Japan, United States of America and South Korea. India is in the early stages of this hydrogen fuel cell technology.
